In an age where logistics companies pop up on nearly every street corner, few stand out. Customers today are faced with the daunting task of navigating the congested waters that is third party logistics or 3Pl's. So how does one choose the right provider? Believe it or not there are measurable aspects a customer can use to their advantage.

Key concerns for customers today are typically as follows: low pricing, good availability and true customer service that actually does rather than says. The good news for the customer is that working with logistics companies should rarely require if at all a signed commitment or contract obligating the customer to ship exclusively with one logistics company. This allows the customer to openly compare variables between multiple service providers.

When searching for a provider it would be wise to begin with companies that have experience and expertise in a particular field. You will find start-up logistic companies often offer a complete menu of over the road, rail, air and ocean services but are rarely competitive or efficient at all of them. A reasons for this is often a lack of freight volume from the logistic company which is required to command discounts from their carrier or vendor base. There is also experience gaps in start-up companies who usually experience a training curve along with time to find their identity or strength. Likewise you will find experienced providers with years of experience that have never fully developed all of their offered services.

These companies usually resign themselves to the fact that they do in fact have a singular core competency. This does not mean however that they cannot be proficient at remaining services but customers should evaluate claims carefully. Over the last 20 plus years of supply chain experience one thing rings true even today. No one company is a master at all modes of transportation. To be successful customers must be willing to subject themselves to occasional cost comparisons from the competition. It is a little like jumping into cold water, once the shock has passed it is really quite refreshing.

When searching: look for experience, compare pricing, stick to strengths, audit service standards and form personal relationships. When you find your match do occasional price comparisons to ensure the relationship you began with is still as potent as day one. Last of all do not go overboard on your service provider the first chance you get to save a buck or two. Be sure changes are due to substantial savings. Good relationships are hard to come by and should not be quickly discarded.
